Who needs a Safety Agent?
On the 7th of August 2015 the Construction Regulations came into being for a Health and Safety Construction Agent appointment by the Client if the construction project had a value over R130m. The client may appoint an internal competent person or an external competent person as long as they are registered with the SACPCMP at the appropriate level, that means that such a person would have the academic and practical experience of working on construction projects.

The advantages of a safety agent
  •               The first advantage is that of complying to the legal requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1999, (Act 85 of 1993), its regulations and the Construction regulations.
  • The next advantage it that the Registered Health and Safety Agent helps the client to manage their worksite in terms of HSE Construction, reducing the clients exposure to their responsibilities and liabilities.
  • Submission of the relevant documentation to the Dept. of Labour, thus enabling the start of the project legally.
  • Entering the project at the early stages as is required by the SACPCMP and thus anticipating, identifying and evaluation of those risks to the project and causing practical and sensible solutions (controls) or recommendations to prevent future injuries and losses.
